Bristol, Rhode Island, USA, is
a beautiful seaside New
England town with a harbor in
upper Narragansett Bay. This is
where I live and write. Our town
has a long and colorful history.
The first major war between the
English colonists and the Indians,
King Philip's War, began here.
Bristol was a raucous, rebellious
town during the Revolution,
played a major role in the slave
trade, and was often a haven for rascally freebooters
and privateers. There are plenty of folks today who
will maintain that this situation has not changed. It is
a great place for a writer to live and work.
We have a few good pubs, and my favorite, Aidan's,
an Irish pub, is the primary gathering place for writers
and musicians, thinkers and non-thinkers, and simply
good folk and friends like Tuffy (right) enjoying some
fine cool pints of ale down by the waterfront. Bristol
harbor is the place that we sail out of much of the
time, cruising in our old bleachbottle Gulfstar sloop,
'Rag Bagger'.
